Save America - she needs all the help

The United States is said to be a melting pot of various cultures from all over the world. This nation, called the “Land of the Free” attracted people from all kinds of backgrounds because they were seeking a place where they can freely express themselves. The oppressed, the ignored, the hurt… Everyone came to the land where “dreams come true” with high hopes. America and its freedom, however, did not extend to all the people who came. As many have already experienced and seen throughout history, the people who sought equality experienced the same cruelty and harshness in this land. The exact opposite of the people’s hopes… Who takes care of these poor and oppressed? Who takes care of these minorities? Who is there to look after the cruelty and inequality of this world?

All the corruptions in the national government do not give much hope to the people of this nation either. With the Bush administration trying to live above the law, the congressmen trying to seek glory for themselves, and all the ignorant citizens, one can easily and surely lose hope. We were once certain that African Americans could be considered equal to the dominant white majority when the Civil Rights movement took place. The “separate but equal” policies showed us otherwise. We were once certain that these unfair laws were eliminated with the ruling from Brown v. Board of Education. Now the women were crying for equality. Then the nineteenth amendment, then the eighteen-year-olds… the list goes on and on. Today’s issues revolve under gay and lesbian rights. When does it all end?

We live in a country where so many cultures surround us. Yet people are still ignorant about the world and all its differences. The national government has to step up and fix these problems. We cannot truly be “united” if we cannot even understand the cultures of our neighbors. Maybe, just maybe, this presidential election will be a point in history when things turn for the better.

I wonder who you are going to vote for? If things are so terrible in this country, my only question is why are we having to put up walls to keep people out? The people you are hoping to fix all these problems are the ones you call egotistical politicians. I wonder how this country managed to be so great with all the problems you speak of. I agree that things are not perfect, but I can think of no other place that I would want to live. If john Mccain wins this election, perhaps you and Susan Sarandon could find that perfect country to move to.

I am in complete agreement with this blog. If we call it the 'United' States, and push the fact that we're a free country, then why do we still struggle with things such as gay/lesbian rights, cruelty by police officers, and minorities being looked down upon? People flock to America in high hopes for change, and equality, yet for years they've gotten harshness in return. I'm not saying that America isn't beautiful, and isn't doing a good job as a melting pot, but I do believe that our nation isn't all it's cracked up to be. If we're going to claim ourselves as the land where dreams come true, then we need to make sure that EVERYONES’ dreams are coming true and not just the wealthy, famous, or intelligent.

I also agree with you in that the national government doesn’t seem to understand how to fix these problems correctly. Problems such as gay/lesbian rights. How is it their say at all to make it illegal for two people of the same sex to engage in marriage? It’s just like a husband and a wife, if you’re in love, then let it be. How can we allow such glory-seeking congressmen to establish our laws without getting discouraged with a lot of their decisions? If we weren’t citizens of America, and we moved into this country, would we be treated with respect and equality, or would we be looked down upon because we weren’t born here? The United States is constantly trying to one-up itself, yet it causes a chain reaction because no one is ever 100% satisfied. It’s gone from African American rights, to non-citizen’s rights, to women’s’ rights, to 18-year-olds rights, and now to gay/lesbian rights. The list will never stop growing, yet there needs to be an end so that one day America can be the place that people can come to and feel comfortable that they made the right decision to be here.

If our national government cannot accept the fact that we live in a world full of cultural differences, then laws will never be made with complete equality in mind. You’re right, hopefully this new election will bring about changes so that EVERYONE is able to call The United States the land of the free.

Firstly, I do not deny the greatness of what The United States have achieved in the course of its history and amount of contribution to the better of the world. However, from taking this class and the history of the United States at ACC, I have learned (I am very history-ignorant person, a Electrical Engineering major who had absolutely no whatsoever interest in either history nor government) that there exist such a horror, an abject history behind a lot of success of the United States.

The subject of slavery and the Blacks of course, is topic number one when talking about subject of inequality. Although much has been changed and the degree of such inequality is less, even today one can not say that all blacks are treated equal. Perhaps it is the history of slavery and considering them the “inferior race” is the cause of it.

In any case, however, as they say “the world is unfair” and I agree. If it is fair to some, it will be unfair to others, and vice versa. Perhaps compromise can be reached to a certain extend for fairness, but a complete fairness can never be reached. One’s gain is other’s loss; when one becomes rich and lead a comfortable life, someone else will become poor. Yes, as you have said, “The national government has to step up and fix these problems”, but I think otherwise. Government can help, but only to a limited extend. It must be the people who reach out and work their way up not the other way round. As there is an old saying, to help someone, you do not provide them with the fish, but instead teach them how to fish.
